Tradition and Culture Meets Digitization: A Quick-Dip Analysis

We are now in the digital age. Companies are now putting their money on digital products, services, and storage. But Filipinos remain with mostly paper documents and invest in traditional storage. In this blog, we’ll discover the possible reasons for Filipinos’ continuous use of physical storage amidst digitization.

  1. Budget

Because the Philippines is a third-world country, Filipinos may struggle to adapt to technological advancements. Despite most technologically adept companies already investing in digitizing paper documents and storing them digitally, paperback persists as a budget-friendly way to process work.

30% to 50% of the Information and Technology budget is often allotted for file data. Add another percent for the costs of digital storage, maintenance, up-time, hardware, and many more components that need to run for digital files. These complicated parts and processes require technological and digital literacy from the workers, and more IT experts in the workplace need to be hired.

The aforementioned factors affect the longevity of digital utilization, if improperly handled, money is aimlessly lost.

Meanwhile, employing the traditional way of processing files is familiar and more accessible. There is a wide supply of file storage in the Philippines, making it relatively cheaper depending on the quality. Also relying on their quality is their durability. While wooden cabinets are common and more affordable, steel furniture is more durable and insusceptible to damage. Simple steel furniture such as file cabinets protects your files’ conditions while they are also easily maintained making them cost-effective. Nevertheless, files will still get damaged if improperly cleaned or used.

  1. Convenience
Digitized or not, it is still convenient to store files physically. Especially since power shortages or ‘brownouts’, as we call them, frequently affect productivity. Moreover, confidential files are somewhat easier to protect physically rather than digitally as they are the only documents for its purpose. One way that companies can protect these documents and avoid theft is to lock them in a safe or a steel cabinet. Their durability and strength may prevent suspicious persons from opening it.
  1. Tangibility
As Filipinos, we are innately tactile. In other words, we like touching things to understand or build a connection to them. Aside from culture, legal matters often involve hardcopy files for legitimacy and practicality. Although the Philippine government has started allowing the submission of electronic signatures and documents, other requirements still need to be handed over in paper form because it serves as official documentation for the purpose it serves. This persistent need creates a demand for more supply of file storage.

In summary, both digitized and traditional Filipino institutions still rely on physical copies. They drive the demand for a supply of physical file storage for different reasons: budget, convenience, and tangibility.
